Who We Are
Many scholarships for Maine high school seniors reward academic or athletic achievement. Few, however, focus on character development. Mainely Character makes character count. We reward exemplary individual behavior and make continuing education possible for deserving Maine students. Since 2000, we’ve awarded one $5,000 scholarship annually.
Everyone involved in Mainely Character is strictly on a volunteer basis. Because we have no paid employees, we are able to keep our costs very low, maximizing scholarship funds. Our organization depends upon the support of individual and local business contributions.
Only half of Maine’s high school graduates go on to post-secondary education. That is one of the lowest rates in the nation, and it puts Maine’s young people at a disadvantage. College costs often prevent Maine’s high school seniors from choosing higher education. Mainely Character will help deserving Maine high school graduates realize their dreams and give back to their communities throughout their lives.
- Encourage and mentor Maine’s youth to embrace a life of character.
- Create a program of specific activities targeting middle school students to provide them the opportunities to develop their unique character potential.
- Establish a financially viable scholarship endowment that will self-perpetuate.
- Bring together parents, educators, scholarship recipients, board members and advisory board members to promote, build and maintain a significant statewide program.
